Lennox Castle Hospital finally closed in 2002 due to changes in social attitudes towards people with learning difficulties and concerns about the level of care provided. Most of the residential buildings occupied by the patients have been demolished, but the castle, which was used as a nurses' home, still stands, albeit in a ruinous state.

An abandoned building in the grounds of the former Lennox Castle Hospital on the outskirts of Glasgow. The hospital opened in 1936 and was home to over a thousand patients with learning disabilities. For a while there was also a separate maternity hospital on the same site betwee the 1940s and the 1960s.

This is a common story for former NHS buildings around Glasgow (I know of at least six similar examples), and you have to wonder how many tens of millions of pounds have been lost by this approach, which seems to have started in the 1990s, of simply abandoning old hospital buildings once they were no longer being used.

The remains of Lennox Castle on the outskirts of Glasgow. Designed by David Hamilton in the syle of a Norman castle, it was built in the 1830s. Between 1927 and 2002, it was used as a hospital before being abandoned. It was destroyed by a fire in 2008.

The ruins of the A-Listed Lennox Castle, just to the north of Glasgow. Designed by David Hamilton in a Normal Castle style, it was built in the 1830s for John Lennox Kincaid. In 1927, the estate was purchased by the Glasgow Corporation and turned into a residential hospital for people with learning disabilities, with the castle itself being used as the nurses' home.
