A few scenes from yesterday evening and last night around town.

Quite a lot of trees are down and lots of infrastructure and buildings are damaged, so it’s going to take a while before things get back to normal.

Still, the town is incredibly busy at the moment due to the festival tonight, when the boat will be taken down to the beach and set alight.

The typhoon is gone now and clean up efforts are well underway. They actually started immediately last night when the wind was low enough, with everyone venturing out and starting to do what they could.

We got power back last night as well, although some areas of town are still in darkness tonight. Internet is flaky and 台灣大哥大 cell towers are mostly offline, but some other providers survived and are now swamped with usage due to #東港迎王, which has been powering ahead today!

In the normal course of work yesterday morning I was on a call with a friend in Taiwan and she told us how things were going with the island-wide shutdown for #Typhoon #Krathon. Another friend gave us an update on her sister who lives in a small town outside of #Asheville. She has running water so she built a shower in the front yard for her neighbors. I said I’ve been worried since #Helene about the people I met who live at Mountain Gardens, a sort of sanctuary for rare medicinal herbs on steep terrain at the top of a dirt road up under Mount Mitchell. Another work friend (in #Portland so we’ve been through fire seasons and heat domes together remotely) dug through platforms I’m not on and found some posts from them. One was a video: sheets of brown water washing their gardens down the hill. A few hours later I was on a call with people in #Phoenix. I think they said it was 113 there at the time. We talked for a while about what it’s like to live in a city that hot. One of them said they had moved there from New Orleans after #Katrina. “I think I like to be in places where I can see it really happening.” At the end of the day I was writing something and I had to check how to spell the name of a river. It’s in a far away city I won’t ever visit because I think I’m done flying. I pulled up a map and there was a warning note on it saying the area was under travel restrictions. That river was flooding too.

Dahil sa lakas ng Bagyong Krathon, maraming puno ang natumba sa Kaohsiung, Taiwan. Napasok din ng tubig baha ang tinutuluyang dormitoryo ng isang OFW.
