Modest progress on https://microstate.neocities.org this weekend.

I've been away in Barcelona this past week for work, but in downtime I have cracked some performance improvements, with offscreen canvases for tile sprites, and a pooling system so canvases can be reused, to avoid the performance impact of creating/deleting them dynamically.

🎉 Construction simulation, mini-maps, and documentation now live on https://microstate.neocities.org

It's a long way from a game, it's just an "ersatz" of a simulation, but it's starting to feel a bit real now.

Somehow almost scary, even though there are zero stakes other than "can I make this fun", as the "proof of concept" bits are out of the way - baring optimization and polish - so now it's down to game design.

I'm going to need some quality time in the pub with a notepad.

Couldn't resist making the placeholder generated buildings look better before bed, even though I'm going to throw them out later - probably in favor of more detailed vector art for the bases with generated components (that are modified when placed, and get turned into bitmap sprites that are then cached).

The previous, even simpler buildings, were all cached as sprites after being generated and so were much faster.

I've created a retro illustrated text adventure game that works on mobile, web or Quest VR headset. Can you retrieve the grixion?

Hello Mastodon. I am Taylor Arndt, COO and iOS developer at @techopolis. I build on device AI apps for Apple platforms.
A unique fact about me is that I am blind and neurodivergent. This perspective shapes how I approach design and engineering.
If you enjoy iOS development, Apple talk, and AI topics, feel free to stick around. I also write on Substack where I share thoughts on technology and innovation.

First milestone complete. I have a music player app that at least works for me. Few more things to get working before I let you all try it. yay! #Swift #macdev #macos #music #indydev
I think I could make a good Mac music player app. Already have experience with the lower level APIs for audio playback and seeking and visualizers and whatnot. It would not re-organize your music files and could also gracefully handle if some of your music is gone temporarily because you unplugged a hard drive or you’re on a different network. It could have smart playlists based on metadata info and such and maybe one day I would cave and do AI-generated playlists. #indydev #macapps #swiftdev

The hardware requirements of the new Indy game are slightly ludicrous. People can say that older cards are just, well, too old, but GPUs are way too expensive right now. Let alone the power they need to run, which leads to high electricity costs, heating... I'd personally like it much more if they would make another hand-drawn adventure like last crusade or fate of atlantis. Luckily there's plenty of indie games that provide that.
