Thomas Boston, Presbyterian church leader, speaks of Christian community, quoting Mat 26 & Deut 15. God has ordained that some Christians are going to be poor. This for their own trial. But the rich have a trial as well, that of supplying the poor.
Do we hear this often from some churches? We are more apt to be told of the need to liberate the rich from the burden of having to hear about the poor.
How can you support your poor brethren?
Daniel Tyerman, Congregationalist missionary, comments on a suffering in Mauritius. Half the island was enslaved for the sugar export industry. Tyerman notes the suffering of one enslaved person here.
This person’s question is an important one for apologetics. All our ethics and politics, and yes, even parachurch affiliations, must have this man’s question ringing in our ears.
