Rather weirdly, for the home of the Scottish National Football teams, Hampden Park is named after a 17th century Englishman, John Hampden, who fought for the roundheads in the English Civil War. This seems to have come about because a row of houses, called Hampden Terrace, overlooked this site, and the stadium was named after it.
Before the first Hampden Park was built in 1873, football was primarily played on converted cricket pitches, such as the West of Scotland cricket pitch in Partick where world's first international football match was played in 1872. With Hampden Park, football evolved and features now common to a football stadium throughout the world, including as grandstands and turnstiles, came into being

It's great to hear that the site of the original Hampden Park, considered the world's first purpose-built international football stadium, has now been given protected status by Historic Environment Scotland. With the recent closure of the Hampden Bowling Club, which had occupied the site since 1905, it was a risk of being lost to redevelopment.
