Went to see the exhibition ‘Trots and Troost (Pride and Solace) - medieval books of hours and their readers’ at the #Groeningemuseum in Bruges (thanks to @svanimpe.bsky.social
for sharing the information!).
Appreciated the work done to highlight women in the documents and contextualisations.
ASB FreiburgDas frühe 17. Jahrhundert hatte eine deutlich robustere Vorstellung davon, wie man mit Feinden der Wissenschaft und der Künste umgehen sollte. Im #Groeningemuseum von Brügge findet sich ein Gemälde von Antonius Claeissens (1536-1613), das Mars zeigt, wie er die Dummheit (kenntlich an ihren Eselsohren) besiegt, während er von Allgeorien der Künsten und Wissenschaften umringt wird. Die "false balance", die auch noch den letzten Unsinn zu Wort kommen lässt, war damals offensichtlich noch unbekannt.
