Musing global-locality, I am connecting my Deptford research project of African and Caribbean hairdressers with the amazing community outreach in Truro. I was dedicated and excited to connect Dame Joan Ruddock (a new follower to my Twitter account) with the outstanding Equality Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) ambassador Sisi (Ethio Queen Braids, Truro) and Cornwall Council (the unitary authority for Kernow) as part of my postcolonial feminist methodological study of Black Britishness and the communicative action of belonging conveyed through the cultural display and presentation involved in the prideful maintenance of afro-textured hair.

Travelling from Falmouth to Sisi’s Ethio Queen Braids in Truro was delightfully detoured by a visit to the city’s cathedral where in a previous visit a tour guide intriguingly drew my attention to a shield commemorating the virtuoso violinist Joseph Antonio Emidy (1775-1835), transported through the middle passage to Falmouth, Kernow, He astoundingly successfully became the leader of Truro Philharmonic Orchestra, and until Wednesday 9th July 2025 was the most notable person of African descent that I knew of in Kernow’s cultural history, until Sisi introduced herself and the extraordinary outreach that she is accomplishing across the scattered African diaspora in Kernow.

Sisi’s multilingual Ethiopian dialectic resplendent English spoken language was my first impression as she described the interview setting to her children. They obediently returned to their studies, leaving myself and Sisi situated in the hairdressing salon engaging in a discussion about Kernow cultural identity and belonging. My initial questions were about the Ethiopian diaspora and the arrival stories that described her journey to Truro, Kernow. She spoke with heartfelt compassion about the tremendous welcome she received when the Ethio Queen Braids hairdressing salon first opened. She received clients from all over Kernow, “some of them so emotional, even in tears [because] they used to have to travel to London, Birmingham whenever they needed their hair done”.

We spoke about Sisi’s outreach and her work with schools and provision of workshops within the local community showcasing the beauty and cultural history of afro-textured hair. My British Academy funded study into race-based hair discrimination motivated my questions, eliciting insights into the Black hairdressing salon as a place of support, dialogue and counselling. Sisi spoke tentatively of clients that had reached out to her after experiencing inferences and “suggestions” of the preferred presentation of their afro-textured hair.

Writing up my notes on the train en route to Falmouth, I formulated the concept of ‘inferential racism’ to explain such times when Black women receive similarly emphasised “suggestions”. Furthermore, in retrospect, I am confirmed in the empirical findings of my Deptford study’s understanding of the Black hairdressers as a community hub and meeting place in which time and diaspora converge to find space for belonging. Sisi’s Ethio Queen Braids hairdressing salon in Truro, Kernow, is an enchanting and exquisite celebration of global-locality and community integrated belonging.
