#Alberta's #Syphillis outbreak was first notable in the 2015 #STI report. In 2019 it was declared an outbreak, but resources were focused on COVID19 during the following years.

By 2022 there were 273 babies with congenital syphillis; 50 were stillborn.

But it is not just Syphillis. In #AB, all the other tracked STIs - #chlamydia, #ghonorrhea, and #HIV - are, as of the latest annual reports, on increasing trends.

Senator Paula Simons (@[email protected])

Once, we thought antibiotics & public health campaigns had eliminated syphilis. Now, Alberta is in the grips of a full-scale syphilis crisis, which is killing babies & leaving newborns with congenital syphilis. How has this happened? In this Senate speech, I provide a disturbing history lesson. In the wake of the Covid pandemic, when public health itself is under political attack, how do we fight back? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o-PMyu9ChCw #SenateofCanada #syphilis #Alberta #ableg #cdnpoli #publichealth
