australians “the biggest losers” 😆
had a discussion recently about the popularity of two-up on ANZAC day, and @stib cuts to the heart of the matter when he points out the game is one requiring no skill —
i often wonder if the appeal of gambling is it’s reassuring to normalise the feeling we are powerless, and at the mercy of random chance….cos the more phukt the world is, the more powerless we feel
the point of gambling is not that our hopes are dashed repeatedly, but that when we gamble, we briefly experience a sense of hope. hungry people think crumbs are better than nothing.
the tragedy is gambling is probably most appealing to people who feel they have nothing to lose — and in system terms, if creates a “vicious cycle” of re-inforcement.
lose ==> have even left to lose ==> lose more
the biggest crock is that gambling turnover is measured as part of GDP. 🙄
and if we are a nation of losers at election time… it is because professional politicians do not inspire us — while we would prefer a lasting sense of hope we can only try to minimise an inevitable sense of loss
voting in australia is a crap shoot.
