Negativland released their fourth album, “Escape From Noise”
This was my introduction to the band and it changed forever how I looked at music and art. I’d heard some experimental sounds, but nothing as clever and complex as this. I suppose it helped that they have some actual songs and overall more structure to each track as compared to their earlier records.
Playing “Christianity Is Stupid” on college radio in 1988 was always fun, and a bit risky. I got a couple complaints from the usual suspects (“communism is good” probably didn’t help either, 😂).
I would use “Quiet Please” as my show opening theme during a second stint as a DJ in the late 90s.
The track I think best represents this album and Negativland’s overall genius is “Yellow Black and Rectangular”. It shows their editing and mixing skills and is darkly humorous👇
