I am about to make what I can only assume is my spiciest online take. I actually don't hate DomeKano. Let me explain myself.
Note: I haven't finished the manga, and I'm very far from it. Pls don't spoil the end for me
I avoided it for a long time because of the whole step-sibling thing (obviously) and the teacher-student relationship thing. I was a teacher until 6 months ago, so that definitely does not sit right with me.
But my friend convinced me to give it a try, and I watched the anime. Not bad, but when I picked up the manga from where the anime left off is when I started to change my opinion.
Two main reasons. The manga is really well-written. Once the characters get out of high school, the story really begins to develop away from the two main gimmicks it used to get your attention. The characters start to move out, the teacher quits teaching, etc. It's still there obviously, but not as prominent.
I love that it keeps going after high school and into early adulthood. Not many manga do that. I also love Kei Sasuga's art style.
That brings me to my last point. Kei Sasuga. The series is written by a female mangaka, and that is fucking cool as hell. Manga creation is such a male-dominated industry, and it's so badass to stand against that and make a successful manga despite all the bullshit she probably had to go through.
At the end of the day, it's perfectly understandable to not like this one. The setup is extremely controversial. What keeps me from throwing it away is everything else about it.
What do you think? #DomeKano #DomesticGirlfriend #manga
