I decided to try out Flarum via Pikapods. Only a few hours in, but it was very intuitive set up and seems easy to navigate. I have just been playing with it solo, so we'll see how well it handles additional users.
Almost went with Discourse but it seems:
* on average more expensive than flarum (for managed hosting costs)
* read some iffy reviews that made it sound like there was a lot of feature creep.
* Flarum seems to rely more on extensions for features, which can also be problematic but for this purpose is probably good.
There is still a chance I cannot persuade my peers to go along with this and thus may wind up on Discord. We'll see!

An oldie but goodie that's I've participated in forever is probably going to kick the can soon and the oldtimers are thinking of creating a new space. I have not looked at anything like this in ages so not sure what the options are.
I think the old board was a DCForum setup. Probably want to keep it pretty minimalist.
