5 Chicago Officers Involved in Fatal Shooting of Dexter Reed Won’t Face Charges

In Illinois, Cook County prosecutors said Wednesday they would not bring criminal charges against five Chicago police officers who fatally shot 26-year-old African American Dexter Reed last year in a hail of bullets. Bodycam video of the killing shows officers from a CPD tactical unit in plain clothes firing 96 shots at Reed in just 41 seconds, following a traffic stop. Officers initially said Reed was pulled over for a seatbelt violation, but he was driving in a car with tinted windows. In April, Chicago city councilors voted down a proposed $1.25 million wrongful death settlement agreement with Reed’s family.

A #police shooting, like that of #DexterReed in #Chicago, is perfectly positioned to activate our political polarization. Conservatives see the situation from the vantage point of police under siege. Progressives see it from the vantage point of Black people unfairly targeted. And I'm not "both sides"-ing this issue -- I have a clear stance on what each person did right and wrong. But our polarization should never cause us to lose sight of one another's humanity.

The two most relevant details in the #Chicago police shooting of #DexterReed are (1) the officers knew nothing about Reed before they approached his car, according to their own statement, and (2) they approached aggressively and immediately drew their guns. Those two facts are all you need to know to conclude that they acted inappropriately.

Many people are blaming #DexterReed for his own death at the hands of #Chicago police by saying that he shot first. We shouldn't excuse Reed for shooting, but maybe we can understand it if we acknowledge that he was swarmed by multiple plain-clothes Chicago cops with guns drawn. And Reed shooting first doesn't explain or excuse the officers' behavior from before his gunshot.

There are many unanswered questions in the police killing of #DexterReed in #Chicago. Did the police officers identify themselves as such when approaching Reed's vehicle? Why did the officers approach with guns already drawn? Who shot first and why? The answers will help determine whether and how the officers should be held accountable. And whether officers who act in that manner make us safer or less safe as a society.
