Trade and tariff policy later provided another multibillion dollar subsidy to American newspapers. In 1911, the US removed the duty on Canadian-made newsprint. By 1957, US had imported 110,000,000 tons of it, about 80% of domestic consumption in 1950. Imports rose for decades after. Prevailing duties before 1911 were $3.75-6.00 per ton.
