Reflections.

The idea was to make a simple study of reflections. A custom gold plated Lego Classic Spaceman was perfect for it. It’s very shiny. At some point the duck just decided to join the photoshoot for some colour.

Nobody asked, but here's my lego space head canon:

Classic Space are the original utopian space explorers ala Star Trek's Federation.

Futuron are an authoritarian offshoot of Classic Space, with the Space Police as their enforcers.

“Now boarding” photo break down - Luigi Priori

Foolish Bricks: Hi everyone. This time I’ll discuss a photo created by talented Luigi Priori (Priovit70). This photo is essentially vintage as this particular image was shot eight years ago. It is a part of a series of photos captured within the confines of a space station, featuring the blue Astronaut and his robotic companion. Looking at photos I always wonder if the creators intentionally put in the information that I/ we get out of an image, analogous to the appreciation of art. Personally, I find it gratifying when an image yields more meaning than was initially imbued within it. Looking at this photo I believe it was a causal shot, likely intended solely to announce the creator's attendance at the Skaerbaek Fan Weekend. Despite its seemingly casual nature, the set-up and composition are spot on and there are multiple narratives to find. Turning our attention to the photograph itself, this photo immediately grabbed my attention. It conveys a message of impending adventure (whether intentional or not) and perhaps an underlying sense of hope for the future (potentially unintended). First the basic setup; The main subject is the blue astronaut who is completely in focus. He and his buddy’s departure are unmistakable, emphasized by the presence of suitcases, leaving little room for interpretation. The sticker gives a specific destination, although leaving it more ambiguous might have amplified the all round impact of the photo, if this photo wasn’t intended to announce the creator’s attendance. Anyway, the space station MOC looks really good, showcasing intricate details such as the gribbling on the walls and the airlock, and of course the astronaut himself (although it's worth noting that the astronaut in this particular photo could be of any gender). The far right of the photo gives the idea of space beyond the confines of the frame. The photo is well balanced with the protagonist placed on the border of the middle-right third of the frame, while the door occupies a corresponding position along the border of the middle-left third. There are one or two relatively dark overhead hard lights with a warm yellow light emanating from within the airlock. This contrast between the cooler tones of the space station and the warmer hue of the airlock adds visual interest to the scene. Also, the rim-lighting on the Astronaut further separates him (besides his color and focus) from the background. The blue astronaut immediately drew my attention, serving as the focal point of the photo. What particularly struck me was the inviting warm, yellow light emanating from the airlock, inviting them both in. Even the robot is bathed in this welcoming glow, contributing to the overall sense that the astronaut is enveloped in a comforting aura of warmth and friendship within the dimly lit confines of the space station. This set-up conveys a message of safety and camaraderie amidst the otherwise shadowy environment. The lines of sight from the astronaut's eyes, as well as those from the robot, converge towards the airlock, creating lines that guide the viewer's eye. One might even perceive a line from the front suitcase towards the airlock. All these lines bring a sense of motion from right to left across the frame. The photo exhibits a relatively balanced distribution of values, with notable brightness accentuating the airlock and, to a slightly lesser extent, the robot. The contrast in value appears to further draw my gaze from the darkness (of the astronaut) towards the bright airlock, effectively creating implied lines. As previously noted, the predominant motion within the photo flows from right to left. A subtextual narrative that emerges from this image hints at a message of hope. Moving (from the darkness) into a bright future (with the help of a friend?). The subtle backward tilt of the astronaut's position causes them to gaze slightly upward, adding to this storyline. This interpretation may not have been intentionally embedded in the image, but it’s in there. Strengthening this message could have involved framing the scene to emphasize the motion from right to left, aligning with the symbolic notion of moving towards a brighter future, typically associated with rightward motion. I know… it’s a detail. Well, that wraps it up for me. A big thank you to Luigi for allowing me to analyze his stunning photo.
