Librarians’ or former librarians’ experiences surrounding Section 28 and LGBTQIA+ representation in children’s books in public libraries in the UK

Invitation Paragraph You are being invited to participate in a research project and it is vital that you understand the reasons behind the research as well as what it involves prior to taking part. Please read through the following information and feel free to ask any questions if anything is unclear or needs further clarification. Please take time to make a decision about whether you wish to participate in this research. Thank you. What is the project's purpose? The purpose of the project is to find out more about Section 28’s impact on representation in children’s books, whether this has changed and how, and what can be improved for the future. The project will continue until the end of August for the completion of a Masters qualification. Why have I been chosen? You have been chosen as you are a librarian or former librarian who is LGBTQIA+ or an ally and have some experience or knowledge of Section 28 in libraries. You have also been chosen as you have signed up to an LGBTQIA+ mailing list from the CILIP LGBTQ Network or the LGBT Jisc mailing list. Do I have to take part? It is wholly your decision as to whether to take part and if you decide to you will be given this information sheet and consent form to sign. It is possible to withdraw from this research, which can be done by simply exiting the survey at any point before submission, and it is important to note that this will have no negative consequences. However, once the data has been submitted on this survey it will no longer be possible as the data will already be anonymised. It is also important to add that by participating in this research you are not entering into a formal contract of employment with the University of Sheffield. What will happen to me if I take part? What do I have to do? This research simply involves filling out this online survey and will take no longer than 30 minutes, no follow up questions will be asked and all data will be anonymised. There will be questions on experiences of LGBTQIA+ representation in children’s books in public libraries during Section 28, how representation has evolved and if and how censorship of LGBTQIA+ children’s books is still occurring today and what can be done to improve this. This is important for this project’s objectives as it looks to analyse LGBTQIA+ representation in the context of Section 28 and any repercussions as well as improvements to these collections that can be implemented in the future. What are the possible disadvantages and risks of taking part? As this is a sensitive topic risks may include possible discomfort surrounding the topic of Section 28 and any implications of this act as well as perhaps discomfort from reliving any negative consequences that it imposed on LGBTQIA+ representation in children’s collections. What are the possible benefits of taking part? While there are no obvious benefits for taking part, this research hopes to increase awareness of the effects of Section 28 in libraries and make recommendations for improved LGBTQIA+ representation in children’s books. It is hoped that with more understanding of Section 28 and any possible comparisons with this act today, this will be able to give a new perspective to LGBTQIA+ representation in children’s books in public libraries. Will my taking part in this project be kept confidential? All information supplied by you will be kept confidential and only viewed by me, my supervisor and if necessary, the External Examiner and internal module moderator. Unless you provide definite consent for it, you will not be identified in any of the research. What is the legal basis for processing my personal data? According to data protection legislation, we are required to inform you that the legal basis we are applying in order to process your personal data is that ‘processing is necessary for the performance of a task carried out in the public interest’ (Article 6(1)(e)). Further information can be found in the University’s Privacy Notice https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/govern/data-protection/privacy/general. What will happen to the data collected, and the results of the research project? The data will be anonymised from the outset with no trace of email address implemented on the questionnaire on Google Forms. This data will then be stored in an encrypted university drive and only accessed by the research team for this project. This data will be stored for around three months after the Masters qualification has been awarded, when it will then be destroyed. Who is organising and funding the research? The research is not funded and the Information School at the University of Sheffield is organising the research. Who is the Data Controller? The University of Sheffield will act as the Data Controller for this study. This means that the University is responsible for looking after your information and using it properly. Who has ethically reviewed the project? This project has been ethically approved via the University of Sheffield’s Ethics Review Procedure, as administered by the Information School. What if something goes wrong and I wish to complain about the research? If you wish to make a complaint about this research please contact the supervisor for this project, Briony Birdi, [email protected] However if you feel that this has not been dealt with effectively you can contact Kate Miltner or Peter Bath from the Information School Ethics Team at [email protected] If this is related to how your personal data has been handled you can raise a complaint by referring to the University’s Privacy Notice https://www.sheffield.ac.uk/govern/data-protection/privacy/general . Contact for further information If you have any questions or would like to find out further information please contact the lead researcher Finola Murphy at [email protected] or if unable to make contact through this route, the supervisor for this project Briony Birdi at [email protected] . Finally … This information sheet along with the consent form will be supplied before the start of the questionnaire where you can indicate your consent by ticking the checkboxes on the first page.
