One thing I love is how many languages had words for retrocomputing practices long before the label existed in English.

Italian: smanettare → to mess around with tech, hands-on, sometimes obsessively. smanettone = a tinkerer/hacker type.

French: bidouiller → to fiddle or jury-rig, half playful, half ingenious. bidouille = the tinkering itself.

Like Spanish cacharrear, these words carry affection for “old junk” and the joy of making it work again—reminding us the culture was alive even before the term retrocomputing was coined.

Who said we don't yet have time travel technology at our disposal?
