Devin Stone does a 50 minute #LegalEagle analysis of just the first part of the #BricksAndMinifigs #StarWars #LEGO affair in #Utah; says that there's a part 2 to come, covering what happened after the other YouTuber got involved; gives a dense information-packed point by point exposition and analysis of the legal positions, including rebuttals of the absurd ones; and points out how a lawyer would have saved some expensive mistakes from happening before even going to court.

Then the comments section is full of people who just ignore all of that, leap to discussing the not even yet released part 2, confuse 'consignment' and 'contingency' amongst other things, and complain about court costs as the reason that lawyers (who, for one thing, know how to serve notices properly) are expensive.

Undoubtedly fantastic in terms of the YouTube algorithm. Kilocomments! But it is saddening to see so many people who did not take in anything that they just watched.

I think this whole Reckless Ben Vs. BAM situation resonates with so many people because it sets on FULL display the values of our capital-centered justice system. At its core, it's an outgrowth of the colonial attitude that spawned it, an attitude at the core of Western patriarchal society that gives white Christian moneyed men the impression that they are entitled to ownership of all the wealth and resources around them. They've convinced themselves that the people to which those resources really belong don't deserve them, or don't use them properly, or are too irresponsible with them that it's perfectly okay to seize them for their own use. And when the rightful owners or original users demand them back per contract or LAW, they make excuses or threats to maintain control, because they've tied their brains in knots with all kinds of justifications as to why they should keep hold of the stuff they stole.

We've seen it happen with land, water, money, housing, our own bodies, and now with fucking LEGO. There is nothing too small, too insignificant for the Colonial project to take from you. They will literally steal candy from a baby, then turn around and try to claim that the baby is wrong for having it in the first place. Even the white people who enjoyed the protection of the white-oriented western colonialism are starting to wake up to the fact that their skin color will not protect them if a rich white man wants what they have.

We're all noticing the ugly writing on the wall now, and getting so close to class consciousness we can touch it. All that's needed now is for those folks that still see themselves as fundamentally different from those marginalized people around them to see the parallel between the blatant theft of a valuable LEGO collection and the blatant theft of land from indigenous societies to finally make the thing CLICK.
