America’s ‘war on drugs’ has increased the country’s female prison population by 800 per cent. For mothers, the global campaign is especially tough. The documentary film tells the story of three women fighting for their freedom, dignity and a life with their children. For more than three-and-a-half years, filmmakers follow the fortunes of three mothers incarcerated for drug-related offenses in the state of Ohio. All three are about to return home. Just like thousands of other women in the United States, they were either born into a drug milieu or got hooked on strong painkillers due to the lax practices of prescribing doctors and pressure from the pharmaceuticals industry. Some of these women ended up using heroin, and then getting caught up in drug-related crime. Lydia, Tomika and Amanda’s stories are just like these. They may have started out from different points, but what unites the three women is their fight for a better life and the opportunity to spend time with their families and children. Tomika’s daughter was just nine months old when she began her jail sentence. The two are only reunited nine years later. A social rehabilitation program and the experiences of other formerly incarcerated mothers support the three women in their efforts to build a new life, although the U.S. judiciary and society in general don’t make it easy for them. The film shows the intimate and precious moments between the mothers and their children and observes the women as they find their way back to freedom and everyday home life. For decades, large supermarket chains dominated the global food market. But bitter price wars and the growing influence of large digital corporations like Amazon and Alibaba are plunging the sector into crisis. There’s been little to challenge the dominance of large supermarkets since the 1960s. But in recent years, the big chains have found themselves in trouble. Competition between corporations is fierce. They employ increasingly aggressive methods of negotiation -- at the expense of suppliers, agriculture and manufacturing - and often infringe on European regulations in the process. But the commercial battle isn’t just taking place between the supermarkets themselves: the huge success of digital corporate giants such as Amazon and Alibaba has meant traditional supermarkets are now having to assert themselves against new actors, who are themselves making exponential investments in the food sector. In the United States, Amazon has opened its own supermarket chain to supplant its business rivals Walmart and Target and capture the American groceries market. In China, Alibaba and JD.com are investing in various areas of the food supply chain. They’re opening their own poultry, fruit and vegetable farms, and replacing human labor with AI-controlled machines. In everyday life, the right side of Silke Kind's body is often stiff; she trembles when cutting vegetables or using the computer mouse. Table tennis training has a positive effect, says her physiotherapist. However there are hardly any scientific studies on how ping pong affects the symptoms of Parkinson's – the disease itself is incurable. For years, the US has been using drone attacks to kill people suspected of involvement in terrorism. But these strikes kill civilians too. In August 2021, shortly after the Taliban captured Kabul, a US drone struck a car backing into a courtyard in the Afghan capital. The drone operators, who were thousands of kilometers away, believed they were tracking an ISIS terrorist and that the car contained explosives. They made the decision to fire the missile in a bid to head off an attack on troops and civilians. But the Hellfire missile killed ten innocent people: seven children aged between 2 and 12, Zemarai Ahmadi, an Afghan employed by a US aid organization, and two of his brothers. Initially, the US military claimed the drone strike had prevented a terrorist attack and that no noncombatants were harmed. It was only three weeks later, after extensive media coverage of the victims, that the Pentagon admitted only civilians had been killed. In fact, thousands of civilians are believed to have been killed or seriously injured by US air strikes in the last 20 years. Leaked Pentagon papers showed that in one five-month period in 2013, 90% of people killed in US drone killings were not the intended targets. The Green Party has long maintained that these strikes violate international humanitarian law and that Germany is complicit because the Ramstein air base in Rhineland-Palatinate plays a key role in US drone warfare.
