M for Memphis the Musical.

What a joyous soundtrack. Lots of great songs which quickly ended up on my Spotify. Definitely one I'd have love to have seen on stage. Some good gospel vibes too which I'm always a sucker for.

Favourite song: Steal Your Rock and Roll or Someday.

Straight on Spotify Playlist: the above two songs as well as Underground, Change Don't Come Easy and Make Me Stronger.

Fascinating Fact; Matt Cardle from X Factor took over briefly in the lead role.

Nope, I didn't miss J - it was Jersey Boys and rather lovely it was too. I'm a bit of a sucker for a medley particularly in jukebox musicals and the ones in Jersey Boys ended up on my Spotify playlist quite quickly.

The Last Starfighter musical is a very odd fish. The score extremely weird with a very discordant style. Very few of the songs really take flight on the soundtrack but it might be a better musical on stage. Certainly science fiction musicals can be a hard sell as the special effects required can be hard to pull off on stage. I doubt this will be a musical I return to.

The Little Mermaid, stage version, has some great versions of the well known songs but I was rather taken with Ursula's new song - I Want the Good Times Back. The added songs for characters such as Flounder, Scuttle and Eric are also good fun even if none of them quite hit the mark.

This was a great project in theory but in practice less so....

I have totally lost track of where in the alphabet I got to. I seem to have missed out J and now I've done L twice - The Little Mermaid and The Last Starfighter.

Kinky Boots. A musical I was much more familiar with being a UK musical based on a fairly well known British film by the same name. An ailing factory starts making boots for drag queens is a odd pitch but it works and there are some good songs from Cyndi Lauper. That said, the soundtrack didn't engage me as much as I expected it to.

Straight to Spotify: Take What You Got.

I also enjoyed Land of Lola but it's another soundtrack which might need a second listen.

It Shoulda Been You. Not a musical I had ever heard of before doing this project. Can't say any of the songs stuck with me but a cast including Tyne Daly, Chip Zien, David Burtka and Sierra Boggess must have been pretty good. It's all about a wedding and the contrasting families that are there - and the fact the bride and groom are both gay. Maybe one to give a second run through too as sometimes I find songs that didn't leap out before do on a second listen.

#amusicaladay never really took off this year but I have been working through a 'new' musical soundtrack, alphabetically, on and off. Today, I polished off the soundtrack to the stage version of The Little Mermaid. But before I talk about that, let's look back on the letters I missed: I - It Shoulda Been You and K - Kinky Boots.

#amusicaladay #9 High School Musical The Musical The Series. I'm not a fan of High School Musical and have only seen snippets but the soundtrack for this spin off TV series on #DisneyPlus isn't too bad. It's actually lead me to watch the series and I'm 3 episodes in. It's cheesy and the characters are fairly tropey at the moment but it's entertaining.

Favourite Song: I'd already come across the song Born to be Brave and that is easily my favourite from this first series.

Favourite Songs: Are You a Believer?, I'm Outta Here, With You and parts of Suspend My Disbelief.

Straight on the Playlist: Are You a Believer? and I'm Outta Here.

Fascinating Fact: Someone obviously agreed with me about the oddness of Ball of Wax as it was replaced by another song 'You Gotta Let Go' for the Broadway and UK tour versions.
