I like how AKB0048 incorporates elements of the actual inner workings of AKB48 into the series, such as the Center position, general elections, and official group activities outside of concert performances (handshake events, photoshoots, television shows, and so on). This is on top of the more obvious stuff like succession of members and graduation.
And the way the idol side of the series is balanced with the sci-fi side is quite impressive, with neither one feeling like it's been tacked on to the other.
I've just begun the second half of the series, and it's as good as I remembered it so far.
