While the phrase "Eat the Rich" is most famously associated with philosopher Jean-Jacques Rousseau (who argued that when the people have nothing more to eat, they will eat the wealthy), in the Japanese post-WW2 model, Japan didn't "eat" the wealthy; it dismantled the Zaibatsu (massive family-owned monopolies) to encourage competition and redistributed land to tenant farmers. This "leveling" helped create a stable middle class.
