#YearPlaylist: 1959 Part 1

It's a long one - uncharacteristically starting with jazz and doo wop before settling back into instros, rockabilly, R&B, and proto-garage rock.

Several coming by way of those Lux and Ivy's faves collections.

#YearPlaylist: 1980

The only ones I actually heard in 1980 are Ramones, Clash, Undertones, and Epicycle (they went to my school).

Quite a lot I listened to in the early 80s, though.

Some stuff I didn't get around to until five years later (Bunnymen, Funky 4 Plus 1)

And a few oddities I picked up on compilations this century.

#YearPlaylist: 1968 Part 1

Far more chart entries than normal for me this year.

Magic Carpet Ride and Mama Tried were on the jukebox at the bar I frequented in college.

Panic was covered by a friend's band.

#YearPlaylist 1944-1945

Combo year in part because of the musicians' strike of 1942-44. But even for several of these, I couldn't confirm the release dates, so it's a mess.

It's a Woody Guthrie playlist for five of the first six tracks. Lead Belly and Arthur Crudup provide the blues, while Dinah Washington, Louis Jordan, and Hot Lips page bring the jazz.

#YearPlaylist: 1994

I am surprised I played so many songs from 1994 on my old show - it really focused more on the 1930s-1980s, based on my knowledge, and my interest at the time.

Which probably explains why so many artists show up two or three times... I just don't know any more that released records that year.

#YearPlaylist: 1931

A short one, not dissimilar from previous playlists from this era.

A few that I learned about from the Anthology of American Folk Music in the early 2000s

A few from the public domain 78s collection on the Internet Archive in the 2010s

And a few others (e.g. Jimmie Rodgers, Cab Calloway, Noel Coward, Ethel Waters) that I've known for over 45 years.

#YearPlaylist: 1954

Lucky 13 R&B, bluegrass, early rock n roll with some token jazz.

Big Mama Thornton stands out, along with various Sun, Chess, and Atlantic recording artistes.

#YearPlaylist: 1973 Part 1

Not sure any of my year playlists have been quite so mainstream - i.e., featured so many hits. Is it because I was still a pre-teen listening to WLS (top 40) radio at the time? Or was it just a good year for music, mainstream or otherwise?

(How does that explain 1974?)

#YearPlaylist 1986 Part 1

It's been awhile, and this is probably not the one to come back with. 🤷 #Year1986 will be in three parts and as with nearby years it's mostly a mix of old school hip hop and garagepunk/indie.

That's not always the best combo, but for good or ill I'm sticking to my alphabetical format of songs from this year that I played on my old internet radio show.
