I don't know if this is a hot take or not, but one thing I like and miss about old games is *factions*. If you look at Morrowind just as an example, there's the Great Houses, Imperial Factions, Native Factions, and even three whole Vampire Clans. And each have varying levels of allies to enemies.
This is where we get into World of Warcraft. There's this YouTuber, just as an example, where he has some of these videos, purposefully taking a position most people would find, if not wrong, then at least contentious.
The reason I think this is neat is because they're not... *technically* incorrect, it's just contrarian and so obviously against the intention of the writers - yet it tries to be as accurate to the details as possible, which is interesting.
Now, it hasn't gone unnoticed that the playerbase is often super, aggressively nationalist, and I'm including myself in that to a degree. Like I couldn't play as a Worgen because I just don't like the Alliance, it feels wrong.
What this leads to is people who main one faction over the other, they will often just straight up lie to make their faction look good. And it can feel like new players are often being straight up propagandized to like they're recruiting for the war, which is kind of hilarious, and kind of amazing.
