Today (3 October) we celebrate John Raleigh Mott, the founder of the #YMCA in the U.S. This commemoration was added to the calendar of the #EpiscopalChurch in 2022 & I admit, it is not one I choose to recognize. Honestly, we don’t really need to celebrate another whyte man creating another boys’ club. Also, he is usually referred to as the “founder of the YMCA” which is not entirely accurate. The YMCA actually began in London, England, UK 20 years before Mott was born. I suppose it might be worthwhile recognizing Mott as a founder & the first president of the World Student Christian Foundation #WSCF (a title he held until 1920) which is an ecumenical organization for young people that still operates around the globe today although not in the U.S. (there is currently a movement to establish a #WSCF-US ). http://www.wscftrustees.org/ Mott did win the #NobelPeacePrize in 1946 along with economist Emily Greene Balch who, quite honestly, is a better choice for veneration despite being a Quaker.
