"So our systems within the government are very old. They were built a really long time ago. A lot of them were built on a computer language known as COBOL. And do you remember hearing all about the 50 year olds who were well, what they didn't know when they kept saying there was all this fraud in the Social Security Administration was that COBOL, when you have a blank field, it defaults to a 50. So this was actually announced during the State of the Union address, and in fact, it wasn't fraud. It wasn't all these 50 year olds. It was a blank sort of little piece of information. So the reason why that's important is because, basically, they've been using duct tape and COBOL to keep all the systems together in in government and to make them work.

WAMU 88.5 - American University Radio
When I was a much younger man living in #WashingtonDC, #WAMU used to replay “As It Happens” at 10:00 pm. Listening to the program (err, “programme”) every night was a regular part of my bedtime wind-down routine.

#TheBigBroadcast, classic #radio on Sunday nights on #WAMU, is my new favorite thing:

The Big Broadcast | WAMU

The Big Broadcast is WAMU’s longest running program. The show features a collection of vintage radio shows from the ‘30s, ‘40s, and ‘50s, hosted by Tony-Award winning playwright, lyricist and director Murray Horwitz.Sun: 7-11 pm ET

WAMU restores access to DCist archives

The decision follows a wave of public outcry to preserve the website’s archives.

well, here are my little yawps about DCist. Seriously, wtf?

#DMV #WAMU #DCist

Why did #WAMU feel the need to brick #DCist's archives? A useful website is now totally blocked by a completely unnecessary WAMU splash page. Sadly redolent of the brutality with which American public broadcasting often operates. The "public" is too often not part of the equation.

DCist is once again being left by the roadside. Their employees are getting 0 notice and 2 weeks' severance. For shame #WAMU #dmv
"over the past year, a wave of journalists have departed the station, including DCist’s top editor who left just a few weeks ago. One newsroom staffer said that, prior to Friday’s layoffs, the station was down to seven journalists out of 14 reporter positions." #WAMU #Mediajobs #Media #NPR https://www.washingtonpost.com/style/media/2024/02/23/wamu-layoffs-dcist-shutdown/
WAMU shuts down local news site DCist, lays off reporters

The station, a member of the NPR network, acquired DCist in 2018. It now has four journalists, down from 14 last year.

Part of my new life is purging out things before I met Jennell (2011). Found a box of cashed checks and bills from 2004-2008 and remembering how I had to mail in payments to now defunct companies #levitz #wamu #frys
During a fundraising pitch, #NPR / #WAMU hosts insisting they don’t want more of our tax dollars (framed as, “the government”) going toward funding public radio is a weird vibe. Five percent of NPR’s budget is “government”-funded. They’ve internalized chronic Republican-fueled under-funding of public radio.
