The Girls in the Band review, and my introduction to a women's film site - Old Ain't Dead

The Girls in the Band is a 2011 documentary about women in jazz. Many players were included and lots of archival footage of them playing.

Old Ain't Dead
Frances Carroll & Her Coquettes Featuring Drummer Viola Smith

Often referred to as the most accomplished female drummer, Viola Smith has always been sensational to watch — both in 1939, when this performance took place, and today via video. Her featured number here is "Snake Charmer." (Perhaps it should be re-titled "Smith Charmer.")

Invidious

Pioneering drummer Viola Smith has died, aged 107.

Viola was a groundbreaking swing, big band and symphonic drummer, often credited as the inspiration for Louie Bellson's use of double-bass drums - as well as becoming the first female drummers in popular music. Viola died on October 21.
