Vinnum Sabbathi – of Dimensions & Theories (2020, Mexico)
Our next spotlight is on number 942 on The List, submitted by buffyleigh (that is, me).
I usually try to space out spotlights on albums I myself submitted, but I needed to pick an artist that started with a “v” (for…reasons) and space seems to have been on many people’s minds lately so…
“of Dimensions & Theories stands on a thin line between sci-fi and an impending doomed reality. The year is 2061 and humanity is ready to become a planetary force with a complete scientific and technological mastery boosted by the invaluable data transmitted from cosmonaut Fritz on her way into a black hole, but the final piece of the puzzle lies hidden in deep space.
Rushed by the constant threat of nuclear war, disease and the imminent collapse of the environment (known as the Sixth Glare) humans have set the ultimate expedition; four earthling cosmonauts prepare to be the first ones in deep space exploration.
Their mission: to reach and explore the ‘point one’ location in order to collect the missing data required to avoid this crisis and finally leap into inter-planetary conquest.”
That is the storyline behind this concept album from the brilliant space/doom metal/rock band out of Mexico, Vinnum Sabbathi. While the music is primarily instrumental, the band makes use of various spoken samples, both historical recordings from NASA and snippets made for the album, to craft the story. Being on the doomier side of things, I particularly appreciate the two Theories tracks (“An Appraisal” and “Beyond Perturbative States”) that provide various opinions on the state of the (story) world and space travel, all of which seem rather familiar these days. In the digital version, these Theories tracks occur in the center of the album; in the vinyl version they are set apart on a 7″, creating an extra layer to it.
If you like this album, be sure to check out Vinnum Sabbathi’s newest release, Intersatelital, an EP released just last year that has a similar feel but with a historical rather than sci-fi take, as it focuses on NASA’s two Morelos satellite missions in 1985 that involved Mexican engineers and the first Mexican astronaut.
