Hey #UnionPlace ! We're on Mastodon 4.6! You can learn more about the user-facing changes in this version here: https://blog.joinmastodon.org/2026/06/mastodon-4.6/

Collections are the big addition, but there's a bunch of other/smaller stuff as well, including a refurb of user profile editing. Give it all a try, and let us know how you like it! Enjoy!

Mastodon 4.6

In Mastodon 4.6, we are introducing a way to create and share curated collections of profiles. We've also reworked profiles and the profile editing experience, added some institutional features, and fixed many accessibility issues.

I just blocked everything except cloudflare from directly accessing our media bucket. This shouldn't impact anything but if you have broken images suddenly on Union Place, please let me know. #UnionPlace
Howdy #UnionPlace , we're migrating to serving via CloudFlare, so if you get any weird behaviors for a bit, that might be the problem. Apologies for any instability and hopefully it'll be short and resolved quickly.

Howdy #UnionPlace! Monthly hosting costs have bloomed a bit over the past few months, from under $500/mo to over $650 this month. I'm taking a look at where we can cut back, but just a reminder that union.place is run by Labor Union Networking Inc, a US non-profit whose main funder is yours truly, and any donations you can make are greatly appreciated!

https://www.laborunionnetworking.org/donate has the details of how you can donate, lots of options available! Thank you for your support!

Okay #UnionPlace, hold on tight, I'm trying a `pg_repack` on our database. It should keep running while I'm doing it.

I hate that I pay almost as much for snapshots (for backup purposes) for #UnionPlace as I pay for CPU time. But I don't exactly want to lose the data!

I really need to figure out how to do a proper vacuum/cleanup on the database without a long downtime. I've found a bunch of docs but haven't had the time/energy to actually attack the process.

Hello #UnionPlace !

We have historically maintained federation with threads.net, but with a "limit" in place to make interaction intentional, in the interest of our mission to provide broad networking/communication.

More and more I'm feeling like that is the wrong decision. So, local users, please let me know: are you for, or against, continued federation with Threads? Do you get value from connections there? Or is it just noise and support for fascism and hate?

Sorry for a few minutes of instability #UnionPlace , I just did a bit of system maintenance (I probably should have done that before / separately from asking for money, but hey, it shows you I'm a real human. Mostly, anyway. Allegedly. I think. Or so the voices in my head say.)

It's the end of the year, do you know where your social media is paid for?

If you're here on the Fediverse, check out your instance's "About" page, and donate if that's something they ask for - because the answer is probably "by you"! Which is great, because it means you're not the product.

Thanks for making 2025 a great billionaire-free social-media year! #UnionPlace gladly accepts donations at https://www.laborunionnetworking.org/donate - we're run by a US 501(c)(3) so donations are likely tax-deductible!
