(cont…)
First novel. Heh. That’s some shade considering Lessing lifted so much from Le Guin’s first novel. So, wish I had read these before Shikasta. (end) #haveread #SF #UKLG #LeGuin #Hainish
(cont…) In all three, interspecies or culture romance or relationship are key and fraught. Winter is a character. Interesting for an author who grew up in the Bay Area and lived in Portland. Snow, blizzard, long seasons (Winter is coming!) are integral and something we see later in her work. (cont…) #haveread #SF #UKLG #LeGuin
(...cont) Planet of Exiles continues and has the trope of the older race of men dying out and the newer, lower men struggling to survive as invaders rampage. Again, one is an interstellar visitor and the other local. Of course, UKLG takes this set up in a different direction. Mindspeech comes more to the fore. And, a young female protagonist. Fear of the other and yet curiosity. (cont…) #haveread book thirty-one of 2024 #SF #UKLG #LeGuin
(...cont) Rocannon’s World is very much of its time. UKLG herself wrote that she could spot some of its flaws. They are there, but minor. It’s a good treatment in the time of Tolkien, elves, men, and dwarves, but an interstellar connection story. The fantasy elements and harder SF work well as the POV of each half of the meeting. I picked up the collected “Worlds of Exile and Illusion” including Rocannon’s World (1966), Planet of Exiles (1966), City of Illusions (1967), with an introduction by Amal El-Mohtar. I’ve read a lot of Le Guin, and think I may have read Rocannon a very long time ago. (cont…) #haveread #sf #uklg #leguin
