Rio Grande LNG (liquid “natural” gas, or LNG) is a proposed methane gas export terminal slated for Brownsville, Texas, in the Rio Grande Valley. This project, and the proposed Texas LNG and Rio Bravo Pipeline, is a clear case of environmental racism with enormous, devastating impacts on community health, Indigenous rights, endangered species, and our shared climate. There’s nothing “natural” about methane gas expansion. Methane gas has more than 80 times the warming power of carbon dioxide over the first 20 years after it reaches the atmosphere. Methane is highly volatile, and this build-out poses especially dangerous explosion risks. Further, the Carrizo/Comecrudo Tribe of Texas, who are the original Indigenous people of the region, have not given their Free Prior and Informed Consent (FPIC) for Rio Grande LNG. The proposed terminal will support the continued environmental racism in the Gulf by perpetuating the displacement, pollution, and physical harm of impacted communities. It is imperative that the supporting insurance companies listen to Indigenous and impacted communities. And time is running out for transformative action to tackle the climate crisis. Despite climate and community impacts and years of community resistance, Rio Grande LNG is set to move forward. Big Insurers like Chubb, Liberty Mutual, and Sompo have the power to stop this project by refusing to insure it and all methane expansion. They have a responsibility to listen to Indigenous and impacted communities and make crucial changes for people and the planet by publicly ruling out methane and Rio Grande LNG immediately, before the insurance renewal on March 1, 2024. We need meaningful climate solutions before it’s too late. Sign and send the petition to the insurers connected to this project: Listen to impacted communities and publicly drop Rio Grande LNG before the insurance renewal on March 1, 2024.
