I was mulling over the enraging phenomenon of Black cops (and judges) and how HARD they cape for white supremacy, and it brought me to mulling about the conclusions people draw around the concept of "whiteness" and the myriad ways in which it is NOT about skin colour.

Black people who fervently desire acceptance within white supremacist structures and systems rightly understand that Black people are not afforded individuality, the way white people KNOW they are.

That is, the negative actions of one white person are not held to be representative of all white people the way the negative actions of one Black person are considered magically connate to the entire race, while the positive actions/contributions of one white person are magically connate, and those of a Black person are considered the exception.

But the conclusion they draw is that they must stomp out any "bad" behaviour in their kin much harder because it "reflects" back on them, rather than the system is fundamentally, critically flawed.

They will NEVER attain whiteness, no matter how hard they may punch or punish a young Black person.

Never.

I have more thoughts on this subject, but this bus ride is almost over. I am deciding how to consolidate these thoughts into something that can be used to affect change.

Our solution to too little parking is always more parking, never making it easier to use other modes of transportation. We spent millions on a new parking structure, but nothing on convenient, secure bicycle storage. There are four shuttle buses to take people to and from the new parking structure and more for the other parking lots, but no shuttle to pick people up from the light rail station, which is further away. It's obvious any form of transportation other than cars is an afterthought.
#TransitThoughts
This is especially crazy, because we do have good transit options. There's a bus stop right at the entrance to our campus, and a light rail station that's so close it's named after us. This could be a perfect opportunity to encourage employees to try new ways of getting to work, which we desperately need because our parking situation is usually so dire.
#TransitThoughts
I was reminded of this by an event at work. We're having a big event with outside visitors on Friday, and our parking can't handle the load. Leadership sent out a warning about the parking situation, asking people to work from home if possible. They didn't even think of other possible means of transportation.
#TransitThoughts
If we want means of transportation other than cars to be taken seriously, we need to remember them and treat them as first class transportation systems. They can't just be something we mention when it's time to talk about transportation options and forget about as soon as that's over.
#TransitThoughts
I was reminded again today just how bad an idea it is to run a transit line down the middle of a freeway. It seems so logical. The right of way already exists, and we know people want to travel along that route. Those of us who use these routes know the drawbacks. The stations are separated from destinations by the freeway, so it's less useful as a form of transportation. The stations themselves are awful, since you're right next to traffic. And heaven help you if a freeway accident winds up on the tracks.

The biggest problem with public transportation here in the USA is it's an other people problem. The designers, builders, and managers of the systems see their mission as providing an alternative to cars for people who can't drive. They should see it as making a system they would prefer to driving.
