I'm surprised it took so long, but trackback spammers seem to have finally figured out that they can sail past the simplest check against trackback spam---does the calling page actually link to the page being trackbacked?--by temporarily adding that link. Or maybe they have for a while, and they've only just started getting past my other layers of defense (namely Bad Behavior and other checks by Spam Karma). *sigh*

Chris AldrichRefbacks were almost all noise and very little signal for me. Pingbacks/Trackback look dreadful and aren’t well supported anymore, so I don’t receive many. Webmentions have been AWESOME and just required two simple plugins for WordPress. My very small personal site has gotten over 6,000 reactions/replies in the past year (with the help of backfeed, particularly from Brid.gy.)
The real win is that I can use my own website to converse with others and don’t need the big social silos the way I did several years ago.
Content Warning (Earworm: Baby Shark) This does make me wonder if Ryan Barrett’s website name is related? It would have been in his formative youth (circa 1985) in a nascent pre-web era. Do tell… Incidentally Tom’s example here is another good reason for Why IndieWeb–one needn’t rely on a silo’s algorithm which may remove content for copyright violations even when it was done with fair use and/or satire in mind. It’s also been a while since I’ve seen someone with a site that had a Trackback/Pingback URL box on their website like Tom does.
