1000 Day Album Challenge (#5) Kendrick Lamar: To Pimp A Butterfly (2015) [05.01.24]

by the time you hear the next pop the funk shall be within you…

I’ve started counting the time since I last paid genuine attention to Hip Hop in decades and not years. To Pimp A Butterfly is one of the few Hip Hop albums to break through my genre indifference in the last 20+ years.

I had been aware of the hype around Kendrick Lamar at least since his previous album, Good Kid, M.A.A.d City (2012). so I’m sure I had been meaning to check out his music on a deeper level for a number of years when To Pimp A Butterfly hit the musical marketplace.

Kendrick straddles the underground and mainstream with aplomb. I imagine many listeners already thought so or suspected, but this is when for me that Lamar announced himself as a major artist. even the mainstream industry sat up and took notice. between 2015 and 2016 he was awarded with 7 Grammys for the music on To Pimp A Butterfly.

right from the start with Wesley’s Theory featuring George Clinton I had the sense that he understands his place on the funk spectrum, dare I say pantheon. he certainly has enough freak in him to have been part of that ParliaFunkadelicment Thang.

for those that feel the funk and haven’t embraced Kendrick this is where to start. I’m listening To Pimp A Butterfly as I write this and am realizing I need to spend more time with all of his music. for example, I haven’t checked out his most recent album, Mr. Morale & the Big Steppers (2022). guess I need to rectify that.
