On the morning of 3rd May 1916 Pádraig Mac Piarais, Tomás Mac Donnchadha and Tomás Séamus Ó Cléirigh were executed by firing squad by the British occupying forces for taking part in the Easter Uprising (Éirí Amach na Cásca).

Clarke then asked Kathleen to convey a message to the Irish people:

"My comrades and I believe we have struck the first successful blow for freedom, and so sure as we are going out this morning so sure will freedom come as a direct result of our action...In this belief, we die happy." 3/3
