Yeah, and I remember that e.g. on Friends the condom messaging was strong. There are several moments where it is made clear "no condom, no sex" not even with an exclusive, monogamous, long-term partner.
On Sex and the City there is an episode in which Samantha has to go to get an STD check-up because she has not been using protection and the person she wants to have unprotected sex with says she has to get a check-up first.
