I keep wanting to add into the discussion of "benefits of slavery" the fact that Africa at the time had crop cultivation techniques, gold-based economies, trade routes, etc. In other words, these were people who already had skill sets and no need whatsoever of being forced to learn new skills that -- big surprise -- only benefited slaveholders.

I am sick to say that I knew nothing of this historical event, prior to watching it depicted on Watchmen and searching Wikipedia to see if it was truth or just lore.
Another commenter on Reddit states they weren't taught Native American history, and they live close to the Trail of Tears.
This is absolutely despicable, we need to do better. If we don't learn from our past, we undoubtedly repeat it.
