I should add this photo is particularly interesting because these lay Chinese Buddhist are taking acarya, which is typically reserved for monastics. Gonda Raifu and his Buzan sect had a more open view since the Meiji Nikujiku Saitai repeal then the 1921 Buzan family protection law. These Chinese lay Buddhist would upset many as the returned to China including #Taixu, who believes such rites and titles were reserved for monastics.
