Tonight's book is HERMAPHRODEITIES by Raven Kaldera. Subtitle notwithstanding, I consider this "a" workbook of trans spirituality, not the end-all, be-all. I liked the different interviews from the various transfolk and that part of the book helped me figure out how I wanted to bring trans-ness to my own spiritual practices.

Tonight's incense was elemi, a lovely tree resin that can be harvested once it falls to the jungle floor in tropical Asia, with no need to cut or do anything to the trees.

The water offering is in the Yin/Yang cup. The candle tonight is beeswax and live flame. As I am now in my home, I can do incense offerings, tonight is from my last bits of true copal which I brought back from a trip to Costa Rica almost 15 years ago.

Tonight's book is actually a slim booklet, but genuinely important. It's the ACLU's guide to trans rights in the state of Washington, where I currently live.

This is my last night doing the ritual under constrained circumstances. I look forward to live flame and space to do offerings.

I don't open and shut the ritual each night, I open it when I start on the first night and close it when I end on the last night. I want the Ancestors to feel they can come and hang out, not like there's some sort of schedule.

Transgender Rite of Ancestor Elevation, First Night

I can't put this on the floor where I am at my parents house, so the ancestors are atop a slim wooden box (that is actually a divination tool). I will have to move this ritual midway through the week, so I am elevating from smallest/topmost book downwards in the stack.

I can't burn a candle at this location, so I am using a solar flicker votive candle. It can "burn" all night safely.

I choose to represent the ancestors on the altar, using a carved crystal skull.

First night's book is HELLO CRUEL WORLD by Kate Bornstein.
