A good solid #Yuri manga. I’m not as taken with it as many other people reviewing it, but it’s well worth reading. On the plus side, it focus’s on a deaf character and a girl that falls in love with her. It doesn’t sugarcoat things. Being deaf has challenges both physically and socially. You're not drenched in disability angst, so you can focus on life with a disability and the sweet story of the character’s developing love.

Why not higher? First, teen yuri angst. Either I have gotten too old for it or the volumes of yuri I have read dulled my taste for it. Second, The over abundance of disability challenged characters. There is the love interest, I have no problem with this. It is a story about her and the main character. Then for meta reason’s an antag character suddenly become deaf. It’s too deux machina for me. Then a minor cute deaf character arrives on the scene. This one fits naturally into the narrative, so good. Finally, we’re introduced to a character with hyperhidrosis. It’s all a little overdone for my taste.

I don’t review things I don’t like. So I intend to continue reading this. The things that I didn’t like are a matter of taste and others may really like them. Some degree of ableism may even play into my view.

The Moon on a Rainy Night

A high school girl’s chance encounter with an enigmatic female classmate whose musical aspirations were complicated when an accident almost completely took her hearing leads to the slow blossoming of love. Perfect for fans of yuri series like Whisper Me a Love Song and sweet, sophisticated romances like A Sign of Affection.

One rainy night, Saki is rushing to a piano lesson when she crashes into a beautiful, long-haired girl, dropping her sheet music in the process. Saki stutters an apology, but the girl simply hands back her sheet music and leaves without a word. Saki begins her first day of high school the following morning, only to find the stranger from the night before sitting at the desk next to hers. She learns that the girl’s name is Kanon and that she is not quite completely deaf, but very hard of hearing. Though Kanon needs to be close to people to read their lips, she tends to push people away with her icy demeanor. Through one kind gesture, Saki slowly begins breaking down the walls around Kanon, even as she feels something new blossoming within her.
