Every year in Europe 11th November is Veterans Day. Red poppies are pinned on. A symbol of those who were sent to fight and die for the sake of the powerful. But this poppy is a reminder of graves - a reminder of death. We choose a different path. We don’t celebrate war. We celebrate those who rejected war. Wars are not fought by presidents, generals or weapons companies. Wars are fought by ordinary people, sent to kill and die for borders, profits and power. But we have a choice. And some have already chosen: deserters, resisters, and those who said no to orders. They are not traitors – they are defenders of life.
We are answering the call by the collective @dezerter_zpravodaj of the anti-militarist newsletter Deserter and are joining the global campaign to celebrate the conscientious objectors, the iwi and tāngata who refused to go to the world wars and the Korean and Vietnam wars and were imprisoned for refusal, and all war resisters past, present and future. Let’s not celebrate wars, let’s celebrate deserters!
