Good background, but they leave out WHY Castro ended up aligned w/ #USSR:

The US-backed #SugarEmbargo, which all other countries have since abandoned. #Sugar was #Cuba's main source of income. Castro had his ppl conduct studies looking for other sources of income, including mining, but nothing was seen as a viable alternative. #USSR offered to underwrite Cuba's economy & suddenly, yrs after the fact & b/c of the embargo, the Cuban revolution (& the island) became Communist.

hangers on. As Jimmy Carter found out with his ill-begotten Mariel Boatlift (prolly relying on bogus CIA advice - think George Tenet's "slam dunk" ). After the USSR ended, they were economic refugees fleeing a moorless economy that offered less than comparatively richer countries with more economic opportunities. Tho the rest of the world that had initially joined the US led #SugarEmbargo have long ago rescinded it, the US stubbornly & stupidly persists.

Before Castro's successful #CubanRevolution, life for the masses was grim under dictator Batista, who welcomed US mafia, other gangsters to Havana to run casinos, hotels.

Castro brought em excellent healthcare, education, gender & racial equality, even a world class ballet company & more despite a crippling US-led #SugarEmbargo.

Castro et al didn't want Batista or any of the crooks that had fluorished & taken over Cuba under Batista, including the US Mafia & their hangers-on, to remain in #Cuba to continue to terrorize, corrupt & sabotage the new regime dedicated to justice & prosperity for the Cuban people.

They were all free to go, and take their stuff with them.

The prosperity part turned out to be harder to accomplish thx to #SugarEmbargo, finally ended in all countries but the US.

B/c capitalism was offended.
