ME:I won the Favorite New Asian Artist award at MAMA 2024.

I'm unsure of how significant this award is, as ME:I were the only group nominated and there was no such award last year.

Anyway, for the ceremony they performed "Click". I quite like that song, but the B side "Sugar Bomb"
remains my favourite track of theirs.

Note how this video name-checks each idol. I wish this practice was more common, as it would make it so much easier to get to know groups.

Every Sunday I look back at the preceding week in kpop and pick out a music video or performance that I have particularly liked. This week I have chosen ME:I – Sugar Bomb.

Can a song with Japanese lyrics sung by a Japanese group count as Kpop? I think “Sugar Bomb” can, because the group are being promoted through Kpop channels, their agency is a Korean-Japanese joint enterprise, the survival show from which the girls come is a Japanese version of a Korean show, many of those who worked on the song are Korean, and to me it looks and sounds kpopish. I just hope, given the complex and often unhappy history of Korean relations with Japan, that I am not being insensitive in my labeling here.

I preferred this B side to the title track “Click”. Look to the lower left of the screen, and you’ll see each idol named as she sings her part; wouldn’t it be helpful for learning names if this practice were more widely adopted in kpop?
