“The females must die,” scrawled misogynistic graffiti on a wall in Stornara (Foggia). The mayor’s complaint.

“The females must die.” The inscription appeared on a mural in Stornara, in the province of Foggia, leaving no room for interpretation. The misogynistic and vandalistic act was reported by the town’s mayor, Roberto Nigro, via Facebook post. “Murals – the mayor wrote – are the symbol of Stornara’s new identity. Thanks to these artworks, our town has emerged from local boundaries to be known and appreciated throughout Italy and abroad. They are the result of the work of artists, the commitment of the Stornara Life association, and the pride of an entire community that chose to believe in culture and beauty as a driver of rebirth and tourism.”

Yet, respect for art wasn’t enough to prevent the work from being defiled: “Whoever defaces and vandalizes these artworks – Nigro continued – doesn’t just hit a wall, but hits Stornara, its image, and the work of all of us. I firmly condemn this act of incivility, written in a horrible way by whoever it may be.” The inscription will be removed in the next few hours by the municipal administration, while investigations are underway to identify the perpetrators: “It could be a young man between 16 and 17 years old, wearing a helmet and on a scooter that citizens had mistaken for a street artist, since our town hosts many for the creation of murals. When I saw the inscription, they immediately alerted me.”

The mayor then urged citizens to feel custodians of this common good, paying attention to all suspicious behavior: “Art that is on the street belongs to everyone, and we all have a duty to protect it. We will continue to invest in murals and the valorization of Stornara as a city of art. No act of rudeness will stop the path we have taken.”
