There is a Finnish guy who does Lego stop-motion animations. They often feature a character called Raimo who ends up with huge and gruesome disasters.
Raimo has just presented an overview of his 15 biggest disasters at the link below. Well worth a laugh. All the individual episodes are worth watching.

Watch the whole thing on their website! It's not super long and explainy but it has a lot of shots that you'll play repeatedly to appreciate the tricks they've used.
On of my earliest compositing a-ha moments was when I saw a senior artist draw thin white strokes onto a huge black image and just moved it through the frame to fake rain. Laika did something similar and mechanical for stop-motion photography on Coraline :-)
