A woman said to be armed with a pistol pulled out a chair and sat in the southbound lanes of Interstate 45 north of Houston on Thursday afternoon, causing the freeway to be shut down in both directions by law enforcement.

Harris County Precinct 4 Constable Mark Herman said commuters could expect “major delays” and asked motorists to avoid the area -- the 19000 block of the North Freeway near its intersection with Cypresswood Drive in Spring.

Houston-area authorities confirmed Thursday night that an 11-year-old boy drowned in Cypress Creek after reportedly jumping in to save a friend.

11-year-old Houston-area boy drowns in Cypress Creek after reportedly trying to save a friend

The search for the child began at around 7 p.m. Thursday after he fell into the creek near the 3700 block of Cypresswood Drive in Spring, north of Houston. By around 8 p.m., rescue teams were searching the water for the young boy.
