Once upon a time, together with friends, I took a shared taxi across the semi-arid landscape of Uzbekistan, on our way west from Tashkent to Samarkand. I revisit this old history now, because soon I will repeat this journey in the other direction, after a lapse of twenty years and a month.

In looking at these photographs again, I can recall the taste the road dust in the air, hear the roar of passing Soviet-era heavy trucks, and feel the hot wind in my face from the open car window. I can vividly remember the bright colors of the women’s clothing at the road stops, and their shining faces, curious about these strangers in their midst.

As a simultaneous prefiguration, as well as a commemoration of the route, I offer these meagre images.
