When the Mayor talks about the findings from Council’s own evaluation that security guards did not address the “root causes” of issues in Footscray, this wasn’t about cops: it was about action to actually mitigate Footscray’s stark inequality and marginalisation. Council’s own evaluation found that security and law enforcement responses are ineffective and harmful - the same thing the community has been saying - and that responses needed to tackle the social conditions creating people’s suffering. Now the Mayor has overturned a commitment to act on root causes to advocate for more police that will make things even worse. This time last year, the cops killed our neighbour in front of Coles in Footscray. He was homeless, experiencing a mental health crisis and Black. More cops is a recipe for more police murders of our most excluded friends and neighbours.
