"So far from God, so close to the USA" is a proverb in Mexico, and the title of a travel book by Patrick Marnham(?sp?) too (It didn't seem as good as _Fantastic Invasions_ but maybe it was because a few decades had passed between readings and I know more about Mexico than I do about Africa...)

I was in Mexico City after an earthquake I knew nothing about. But there were displaced people in tents in the middle of the city. And the public phones were free. A few decades later and #CarlosSlim was the richest guy in the world from controlling all the phones in Mexico🤔
