自動車メーカーがネット接続可能な車から直接データを収集し、それを世界規模のブローカデータレクシスネクシス(LexisNexis)のリスクソリューション部門が分析し、保険会社に販売している。多くの場合、運転者の同意を得て、運転距離、その他で保険料を算定する保険用にデータを収集するが、ナビやロードアシスタンス、その他のアプリのネット接続により、データ収集に利用されることもあるという。GM、Honda、Kia、Hundaiなどの最近のモデルには、運転を評価するアプリが装備され、それを活用すると自動車メーカからLexisNexisなどにもデータが送られる。メーカとデータ収集会社は顧客の許可をとっていると言うが、プライバシー契約の細かい文言まで読む顧客を少なく、運転データが収集されていることを知らない顧客も多いようだ。

この記事で紹介された例では、自動車保険の見積もりが8社すべてで、21％も値上がりしたことを不審に思ったシボレーボルトの所有者が保険会社に尋ねたところ、LexisNexisの報告書がその理由であることがわかった。報告書には、過去6が月間の640回の走行のデータ。どこを走ったかというデータを除き、走行距離、速度、急加速、急ブレーキなどが細かく130ページも。
